Hello,
Welcome to Worth Watching.
There’s going to be a follow-up to W1A and Twenty Twelve on the BBC next year.
The BBC announced on Thursday Twenty Twenty Six, which will feature Hugh Bonneville running the fictional organising committee for the 2026 World Cup.
Ian Fletcher (that’s Hugh) will be heading to the US, so the six-episode mockumentary won’t be featuring the likes of Perfect Curve’s Siobhan Sharpe (Jessica Hynes) or the hopeless yet endearing intern Will Humphries (Hugh Skinner). However, John Morton, who wrote the other two, will be writing this series as well. So that’s all good.
SHOW OF THE WEEK
Grenfell: Uncovered (Netflix, 100 minute documentary) –A meticulous, thoughtful and damning documentary on the causes of the Grenfell Tower Fire, highlighting how systemic failure, poor regulation and greed caused the deaths of 72 people in 2017.
As well as honing in on the findings of the inquiry, which dominated the news headlines but only for a day or two, it highlights how similar combustible materials are still on thousands of buildings throughout the country seven years on.
Quite simply, and echoing a sentiment made by a contributor of the film, private profit is seen to be more important than safety.
At a time when Netflix documentaries can occasionally slip into retelling a story without anything new, this film makes great strides in providing new revelations about the cladding wrapping the tower. The documentary is a difficult watch, but an important one, akin to a film you would see on a public service broadcaster to make.
