Hello,

Welcome to Worth Watching.

It’s the weekend. It has been a relatively quiet May when it comes to new television. Glastonbury, though, is around the corner. I would expect an announcement about their upcoming television coverage in the next week or so.

TV ON THIS WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEK

  • BBC Three airs What It Feels Like for a Girl from Tuesday 3rd June, inspired by the acclaimed memoirs of the journalist Paris Lees. Reviews are embargoed until the day of release, but considering that there’s a lot of buzz about it feels inevitable that a write-up will make this newsletter next week.

  • The final episode (possibly for a long time) of Doctor Who airs on Saturday night. Previews of the finale are not available to journalists, with speculation rife that Ncuti Gatwa will be regenerating at the end of the episode.

  • Will the series continue? I honestly don’t know. Ratings for the current series are not great, and Disney+ won’t confirm whether they will renew the current distribution deal until the series has ended. Even if they do renew, I doubt we’ll have new episodes until 2026, maybe even 2027.

SHOW OF THE WEEK

Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story (BBC iPlayer, one episode) – The best biographical documentaries are the ones where you end feeling completely immersed and appreciative of someone else’s life, even if you wouldn’t have called yourself an ardent fan beforehand.

This 100-minute film on the life and career of Liza Minnelli is one of these biographical documentaries for me. It delves into her prolific career and her achievements, whilst also touching on her personal struggles and relationships (at one point, she recalls that a member of the audience yelled “marry me?,” to which she responded “Marry you? With my track record?”)

What shines through is her constant positivity, despite her setbacks. Her friend Mia Farrow, who appears as one of the talking heads, said that she has a “purity of heart.” After watching this documentary, I’m sure you’ll agree too.
